UCDCS Best Paper ICCBR Conference
Mr. Eoin Kenny (PhD) and Prof. Mark Keane's work in the VistaMilk SFI Research Centre has won an international award for using Artificial Intelligence to predict grass growth for the dairy sector at the 27th International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ICCBR-19) held at Otzenhausen Germany. The work involved a collaboration between Computer Scientists at University College Dublin (UCD) and Animal and Grassland researchers at Teagasc Moorepark (Teagasc). The dairy sector in Ireland is a pasture-based system, where animals are grass-fed, a feature that is now being used to promote Irish dairy products abroad. So, the accurate estimation of future grass growth is critical to the all Irish dairy farms, as they must budget grass supply and demand to manage their business and make better decisions that impact profitability and environmentally efficiency.
Prof Mark Keane said “This is the first product of this new collaboration between Computer Science researchers at UCD and Teagasc researchers and bodes well for what we might do in the future. These AI technologies will transform the Agricultural sector in the coming years improving many aspects of the agri business, in general, making it a more sustainable proposition"
